We all know that cats can be fickle creatures. And no matter how much we care for them, they do not always show their appreciation. They can often like an empty box as much as that expensive toy you bought them. Do not be discouraged, though. You can still present your pet cat with engaging toys and activities to provide exercise and enjoyment without breaking your bank. Below are 4 purrrfect DIY projects for you and your pet!
1. Cat Shelves
DIY Cat Shelves are a great, space-saving alternative to the traditional cat tree. This project allows you complete customization to counteract a small space and to compliment your home decor.
You will need:
- Wooden shelves or Scrap Wood
- Wall Brackets
- Padding or carpet
- Wood glue or double-sided tape
- Screw driver
- Scissors
- Saw (optional)
- Sanding paper (optional)
You can pick up cheap shelves with wall brackets from The Home Depot or Ikea. If necessary, cut the boards down. Be sure to sand any cut edges. Attach the wall brackets according to package instructions. Make sure you place the shelves close enough for you cat to jump or walk from one shelf to the other.
You can cover your shelves in padding or carpet by using wood glue or double-sided tape. If you use double-sided tape, you will be able to easily remove and clean the material. You could also replace it with a new pattern!
2. Cat Puzzle Toy
This easily assembled puzzle toy can be made with household objects and will keep your cat occupied all day.
You will need:
- Plastic food container with lid
- Knife
- Scissors
- Black Marker
- Lighter
- Small cat toys
- Cat treats
- Rubbing alcohol (optional)
- Shot glass (optional)
- Cutting board (optional)
First, secure the lid on the plastic food container. Then, use the black marker to trace three circles on the lid. Use a shot glass or other small, round container for the shape. Remove the lid and place it on a cutting board or other sturdy surface. Use a knife to cut an “X” shape into the plastic. Next, insert your scissors into the opening you just made and cut out the remaining plastic. Repeat 3 times.
You can use rubbing alcohol to erase any leftover black marker from your lid. Burn the edges of the openings with a lighter to ensure smooth edges for your cats. Place a few of your cat’s favorite toys and treats into the container and close the lid. Put the puzzle box on the floor and watch your cats go crazy for it!
3. Cat Window Perch
A cat can spend hours a day sitting in front of the window watching birds, bugs, and other enticements. This sweet sitting spot will be a cosy and comfortable retreat for your cat.
You will need:
- Old tea or dinner tray
- Pillow
- Shelf Brackets and Screws
- Screw driver
Before you get started, make sure you measure the length of your window. You do not want to get a tray that is too big or too bulky. The tray does not have to span the whole window but should be large enough to fit your cat.
Next, attach the bottom screws of the shelf brackets to your window ledge. Hold the tray in place so you can mark where the short screws will go into the tray. Remove the tray and pre-drill the holes. Return the tray to the window and screw in to the shelf brackets. Place the pillow on the tray. Your cat will be sitting by the window in no time.
Side note: You can easily attach a toy to this perch using a piece of ribbon and an eye screw. Twist the screw into the side of tray. Loop the ribbon into the eye and secure.
4. Cat Hammock
This cat hammock is an efficient way to rethink a simple cat bed. This design is by far the easiest on this list and takes under 30 minutes to complete.
You will need:
- A piece of fabric large enough to accommodate your cat laying down
- Plastic or Metal coat hangers
- Shower Curtain Rod
- Thread
- Needle
Lay the fabric on the floor and place a coat hanger on either side. Take 3 to 4 inches of fabric and fold it through the coat hangers. Sew the hem of the fabric to the backside, creating a pocket that houses the bottom part of the coat hanger. Now, find two upright surfaces in your house to hang the shower curtain rod. Place the hammock on the curtain rod. That’s it! Now your cat can daydream about how much you love and care for him or her!
Side note: If your cat is on the chubbier side, use metal hangers instead of plastic ones.
